9/11 Run to Remember: Lexington's Tribute to the Victims of Sept. 11 Attacks

A Day of Remembrance and Unity

On Sunday, September 11, 2023, the town of Lexington, Massachusetts, will once again host its annual 9/11 Run to Remember. This year marks the 22nd anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Flight 93, which claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people.

The 9/11 Run to Remember is a 5K race that starts and finishes at the Battle Green, the site of the first battle of the American Revolutionary War. The race is open to runners and walkers of all ages and abilities, and all proceeds benefit the 9/11 Run to Remember Scholarship Fund.

A Legacy of Service

The 9/11 Run to Remember was founded in 2002 by Lexington resident Chris Landry, who was inspired to create a lasting tribute to the victims of the attacks. Landry, a former Marine, served in Afghanistan after 9/11 and was deeply affected by the loss of life and the sacrifices made by so many.

The scholarship fund provides financial assistance to the children of 9/11 victims and to first responders who were injured or killed in the line of duty. Since its inception, the fund has awarded over $1 million in scholarships.

A Community Comes Together

The 9/11 Run to Remember is more than just a race; it is a day for the community to come together and remember the victims of the attacks and to honor the first responders who risked their lives to save others.

The race is a solemn event, but it is also a celebration of life and community. Participants and spectators alike are encouraged to wear red, white, and blue and to carry American flags. The race route is lined with signs and banners honoring the victims and the first responders.
